World Epilepsy Day falls on the second Monday of February. It is a day we celebrate to raise awareness about epilepsy, promote correct understanding of how to deal with it, and highlight the importance of community understanding and support for people with epilepsy.

What is epilepsy?

It is a chronic neurological disorder that occurs as a result of electrical activity in the brain, leading to sudden and recurrent episodes of varying severity and symptoms, which may be mild, such as loss of consciousness for a few seconds, or severe, such as muscle spasms affecting a part of the body or the whole body.

What are the causes of epilepsy?

• Genetic factors.

• Head injuries.

• Brain disorders.

• Neurological diseases.

• Problems during pregnancy.

What is the correct way to treat someone having a seizure?

• Do not restrain him or prevent him from moving.

• Remove any sharp object that is near the injured person.

• Avoid putting food or drink in the mouth of the infected person.

• Place it on one side to make breathing easier.

Why do we celebrate this day?

To raise awareness about this disorder and support those affected by it, to spread accurate knowledge about its causes and effects and how to deal with it, and because of the importance of providing a more inclusive and understanding environment for people with epilepsy.
